Pink Slime
The company who have been surrounded by controversy for using the ‘pink slime’ beef filler have filed for bankruptcy.
AFA Foods have announced that they are going to be filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and that they are also going to be selling their assets after the public outcry over the controversial beef substance ‘pink slime’ derailed the company’s efforts to save their already struggling business.
The company are based in Pennsylvania and they process more than 500 million pounds of ground beef products each year and they also distribute to retailers like Wal-Mart and Safeways however, both supermarkets now refuse to sell products containing ‘pink slime’.
This ‘pink slime’ is an ammonia treated product that is used as very inexpensive filler for ground beef and beef-based processed meats. The reason there is so much controversy surrounding it is due to the fact that it is a treated product and there were concerns that it may be a risk to human health despite the fact that there’s been no reported cases of any illness due to consumption of the product.
AFA Foods provide beef to Burger King and Wendy’s and it’s due to the mass sale of the beef products which have the pink slime in to main stream companies like this that is the cause for concern with many.
The filing for bankruptcy comes a week after Beef Products Inc. another company that sells ‘pink slime’ announced that they were going to be suspending operations at three of their four plants in the US and it is set to affect around 650 jobs.
